The amount of horses on the farm varies at any one time due to the seasonal nature of racing and breeding.

There are about 20 broodmares permanently  on the farm.  Most of these broodmares produce foals between January and June each year; also their progeny from the previous year remain on the farm until the following January, when they go into training.  Therefore, there can be as many as 40 young stock on the farm at any one time, as well as several others that are bought in at the foal and yearling sales.

Littleton Stud has an everage of 30 horses in training (with various trainers).  Most of these horses come back to the stud farm for rest periods between September and January. This can swell to numbers by an average of 10 at a time.

Therefore, the minimum number of horses (including youngstock) on the farm at any one time would be approximately 60, with a maximum of approximately 90.

We pride ourselves with the strict procedures that we have in place and follow the code of practice for thoroughbred breeders.

Disease Control

All of the horses are kept in the most natural state possible whereby they are relaxed, in herd groups, well nourished and therefore, hopefully (in the case of broodmares) at the peak of their fertility.
